After seeing the Elephant and I quilts I had done on a Facebook post I was contacted by a sweet lady by the name of Emily who also had an Elephant quilt. She asked if I did any custom work because she had an applique quilt that she would like quilted. She came to my house one afternoon, brought her quilts along with a mini applique quilt for me to do. I immediately got started on the Elephant quilt and picked a perfect design for it. Then I figured the mini would be fun to do and did a bunch of custom designs that really made the applique shine. Then it was time to tackle the Tulip Applique quilt. To be honest I was totally overwhelmed and completely terrified. I hadn’t done a lot with applique on my longarm but I was up for the challenge. Well, challenge it was. I didn’t see the light of day from early in the morning to late at night for a week straight. I explored every quilting technique possible, I learned a ton and pushed my quilting to perfection standards. In the end it proved to be my greatest quilting achievement to date! The best part for me was the fact that Emily was absolutely thrilled with my quilting and so has begun an ongoing quilting relationship. I can’t wait to see what she brings me next!
I don’t know who is luckier, my mom because she has a personal quilter at the ready or me because I get to quilt her quilts! I love this Kittne pattern, it’s the second time I have quilted it from a Pine Needle Quilt Shop kit. They chose the best fabrics! The design I used was Marbled Cake by Karlee Porter Designs and I think it works perfectly with this quilt. My mom makes the most beautiful quilts!
My Gammill Statler Stitcher is absolutely the most amazing machine in the world!Typically T-shirt quilts make me go eek! Lots of layers and unpredictable fabrics. Lana, the same customer that made the Ducks quilt, made this for her other grandson using his cherished T-shirts, full of memories. And of course he too had to have Minky!! All the challenges that T-shirt quilts typically pose were absolutely zero because Lana is an expert at piecing! This quilted like a regular quilt, my machine just zoomed right over every t-shirt every border was perfect and the back!!! Holy cow that minky back is so awesome!!!!!! I bought several pebble designs but none of them were quite the scale that I wanted, until I saw this Pebbles design by Kim Diamond, it was perfect, there weren’t too many small pebbles so the minky stayed soft and the top not too dense. Thank you Lana for another incredible quilt!
Is there such thing as a perfect quilt?? This one might be the first! Audrey made this Regular Joe quilt for her son’s graduation and needed a very quick turn around, how is less than 24 hours? Done! This was a breeze to quilt, perfectly pieced and completely square! I love the Kindling design it gives the quilt movement and has a masculine feel to it and doesn’t overwhelm the quilt in any way. Thank you Audrey!!
I can’t say it enough how much I enjoy custom quilting. This is the second Dresden quilt of Jan’s that I have quilted. I had just as much fun quilting it this time as the last. I used completely different designs on this one, keeping with the precious heirloom feel of these handmade Dresden blocks. This quilt will be cherished for years!!
If you are an Oregon Ducks fan you will love this quilt! I sure loved quilting it. It was my first experience with minky fabric and I was pretty terrified. I am now a huge fan of minky I can’t believe how well it quilts! As long as you keep the pattern on the larger scale it’s an absolute dream, I think this Swing design was a great choice! My customer was absolutely thrilled! Quack, Quack!
Last summer I made and quilted this same Elephant and I Quilt by Jennifer Sampou for A Common Thread quilt shop. My customer Diana was inspired to make the quilt when she saw it hanging in their store. Not knowing it was mine but seeing the heading on my blog she hired me to quilt hers. Small world! We looked at several edge to edge designs and in the end she had her heart set on the same kind of organic free motion style that I did with mine. That was a major treat for me! Organic style quilting to me is like quilting from the heart, I just start stitching and let it flow. It’s not perfect, it’s not planned but it creates texture and movement and in the end I just hoped she liked it. She did!!! Phew!!
With quilt market right around the corner I got a huge opportunity to quilt once again for Elizabeth Elliott (@libselliott). She uses a generative code system for making her patterns and they are absolutely coolest, see my Rebel Quilt below. This one is called Exploding Stars using all the fabrics from her new collection called True Love by Andover. I used a digital design called Vortex by Karlee Porter and added some little surprises of my own that I just knew Libs would be down with!
I hit the fabric jackpot!! A few weeks ago I got the best Instagram notification ever! I won a half yard bundle of 5 different Art Gallery Fabrics. The collections were Lavish, Essentials II, Chalk and Paint, Forest Floor and Pastel Thrift. After seeing my friend Christina Lane’s (@sometimescraftr) Donut quilt she made for her sister’s wedding, I thought it would make a perfect weekend project, and I had to use new fabric! I chose mostly fabrics from Lavish by Katarina Roccella and Essentials II by Pat Bravo.
I really love the soft feminine sweetness of this quilt, which is typically not my style but lately I feel myself migrating from a more modern, improvisational quilter to a more traditional, vintage, heirloom style.
As far as the quilting, my favorite part! I used the Modern Flowers design by Natalia Majors for the borders! The rest I did all free motion and ruler work. As much as I love the perfection of my Statler along with the challenge of choosing and setting up the designs. I truly love to do hand guided work. My hope is that more of my business develops into custom hand guided quilting.
